Never let it be said that nothing good comes from Americans' love of texting. Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile USA came up with a unique method to raise money for Haitian earthquake relief.
The method allows cellphone users to donate $5 to Haiti-born hip-hop musician Wyclef Jean's Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund by texting the word "Yele" to 501501, or donate $10 to other nonprofit organizations, such as the American Red Cross, by texting the word "Haiti" to a specified number, like 90999. The donation is then charged to the user's cellphone bill but the text charge is itself is on the house (the house being the wireless carriers).
So far, US cell users have contributed more than $11 million to Haitian earthquake relief. According to individuals on the inside, there were periods where 10,000 text donations were coming in per second!
